Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 18, 2009

Paul E. Hayden or Brother Declan, 62, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Leonardtown, was killed in a head-on collision October 3, 2009. He graduated from Ryken High School in 1965 and in September 1966 he entered the Congregation of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. He received the name Brother Declan and began his religious life at the motherhouse in Albuquerque. His early years of formation were spent there before being sent to serve at Good Shepherd Manor in Momence, IL., among the mentally and physically disabled. He was sent to Philadelphia, where he served the poor and homeless at a soup kitchen and shelter. On the weekends, he could be seen in the park giving out sandwiches to those in need. He served briefly in Miami. Upon returning to Albuquerque, he went to school to obtain a licensed practical nurse degree. Shortly thereafter, he began his prison ministry. Every Saturday he went to the clinic and picked up medications and took them to the inmates at the jail. There, he was known for his big smile and hearty handshake. This mission was his joy. He is survived by his father, Elbert I. Hayden of Leonardtown; three sisters, Sister Marilyn, Charlotte and Sharon; and four brothers, Spencer, Tom, Owens and Gary. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Virginia Hayden; his sister, Ruth; and his brother Wayne. Arrangements were handled by French Funeral Home in Albuquerque. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd, c/o Brother Gerard, Good Shepherd manor, P.O. Box 389, Albuquerque, NM 87103
