Obituary for CHAVEZ

Frederico Chavez, 79, retired golf course superintendent, died Thursday at the VA Memorial Hospital in Albuquerque after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Chavez was born in Cubero, New Mexico in 1930 to Estanislado Chavez and Adalida Gonzales. In 1949 he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean Conflict. During his 48-year residency in Albuquerque, he was superintendent of the Los Altos, Arroyo Del Oso, UNM, and Rio Rancho golf courses. Golf was his passion until his health no longer permitted him to play. "Freddy" Chavez traveled all over the country to play golf and participated in golf tournaments such as The Charlie Pride Celebrity Tournament and the Los Borrachos Tournament. In 1998 he and his wife, Corine, retired on a ranch in his hometown of Cubero, and lived contently until the onset of his illness. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Corine Chavez; six sons, Jose Esequel Chavez and wife Donna of Albuquerque, NM, Anthony Chavez of Cubero, NM, Paul Chavez of San Francisco CA, Lawrence Fred Chavez of Albuquerque, NM, Robert Mejia and wife Rhawnie of Mesa, AZ, and Ricky Chavez of Cubero, NM; two daughters, Carol Encinias and husband Chris of Corrales, NM, and Sofia Frederick of Denver, CO; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lita Vallejos of Los Lunas, NM, Micky Otero of Maywood, CA, and Arline "Rosie" Maldonado and husband Jesse of Albuquerque, NM; three brothers, Roy Chavez and wife Susie of Riverside, CA, Joe Chavez of Albuquerque, NM, and Carlos Chavez of Albuquerque, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Mae Chavez and Sally Chavez. A Rosary in his honor will be recited at Salazar and Sons Mortuary, 400 3rd St., SW, Friday, October 9, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Cubero, NM.
