Obituary for MAYO

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday October 02, 2009

Virginia Florence Nelson Mayo passed away at home September 26, 2009, after a courageous battle with cervical cancer. She was born in Webster City, Iowa on August 6, 1930, the daughter of C.O. and Clara Nelson. She moved to Albuquerque with her family in 1936. She attended Albuquerque High School and received her BA in accounting from the University of New Mexico in 1950. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, C.O. and Clara Nelson; and her brother Jack. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dick Mayo; her son Richard; daughter Carol Mayo Cochran and her husband, John; and her only grandchild Rachel Cochran, with whom she, of course, had a very special relationship. Virginia was a practicing accountant for 59 years and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1962, becoming the fifth woman to be certified by the State of New Mexico. She received her certificate the day before her daughter, Carol, was born. After working for several years at what is now known as the Rogoff public accounting firm, she went into private practice, eventually forming her own small business corporation. Virginia was dedicated to her family, profession and clients. She was conservative in nature and had a strong work ethic. She particularly enjoyed tax accounting and financial planning. Virginia was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church for 47 years, and a member of the Naomi Circle of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed parlor games of all sorts, particularly bridge which she played with her friends at church. At her request, Virginia was cremated. Services will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10:30 am, with the Reverend Clyde Stanfield officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the service, in the Sonshine Cafe of St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona St NE. Virginia's remains will be interred at Fairview Memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, 87111.
