Obituary for TRYON

Mildred Barnett Tryon, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1964, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009. She is survived by her nephew, E. B. Barnett III of San Antonio, Texas; nieces, Kay Fleenor of Dickinson, Texas, and Penny Barnett of Austin, Texas; great-nephews, Craig Fleenor, Ryan Barnett, Tyler Newman, and great-niece, Kristin Barnett. She is also survived by her extended family, Dayyani's and Vadiee's . Mrs. Tryon was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, William C. Tryon, mother and father, Eugene B. and Clara Barnett, sister, Barbara Barnett, and brother, Eugene B. Barnett, Jr. A 1935 graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, Texas, she then graduated in 1937 from John Sealy College of Nursing and in 1940 obtained a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. She also did post-graduate work in psychiatric nursing in Hartford, Connecticut. She served as a Lt. in the U. S. Army Nurses Corp from 1942 until 1946 serving in North Africa and Europe with a brief stint as a German army POW. After World War II, she obtained another degree from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. Mrs. Tryon retired from the Public Health Service with the rank of Lt. Col. after serving in Nevada, Mississippi, Idaho, Atlanta, Colorado, and Santa Fe. After retiring, Mrs. Tryon was a volunteer with Meals on Wheals, was active through the University of New Mexico as an American family for numerous students from other countries, was active in numerous Veterans groups and projects, was a member of the Retired Officers Assn., was the NM affiliate representative on the governing board for the American Public Health Assn., and was a past president of the New Mexico Public Health Assn. Until declining health occurred, she was a member of Hoffmantown Baptist Church, American Assn. of University Women, and The Friendship Force. Mildred had many dear friends to this day from her college years, her war years, her PHS years, and her retirement years. She definitely never met a stranger. She greatly enjoyed traveling the world, new experiences and different people. She was a great story teller and family historian. And the phrase, "A friend in need is a friend indeed" certainly applied to our aunt and friend. Services will be held Monday, September 28, 2009, 10:30 a.m., at French ~ Wyoming Chapel. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 1:30 p.m., with full military honors.
