Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday September 27, 2009

Dallas Schuster, 66, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2009 in the loving arms of his daughter, Karmen at the Veterans Hospital in ABQ, NM due to complications of COPD and prostate cancer. Born February 8, 1943, Dallas was raised on the family farm in Beatrice, NE. Dallas served our country honorably in the United States Air Force from January 9, 1961 until his discharge on January 8, 1965. He is survived by his daughters Karmen, Melinda and Melody Schuster of Texas, Ohio and California; son, Cody Schuster of Phoenix; daughter, Daphni Ames of CA; stepchildren Mike and Aura Patton of San Francisco; sister, Jan (Sis) and her children Todd and Tammy; brothers Robert, Ronnie and Robert; Mother, Edna of Beatrice, Nebraska; his beloved grandsons, Tyrone and Terrance of Texas; and former wife, Cheryl of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his father; and former wife Mary Jo. He will be sorely missed by his housemates, Chet and MaryEllen Karnas and family; who will miss his stories, his determination, his goodwill, his homemade guacamole and his presence in their home. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Dallas moved to the San Francisco Bay Area living in Marin County and eventually settling into a former chicken ranch in Petaluma, CA, which was the one place he considered "home". There he started his entrepreneurial career in the antique business, art and jewelry importing, horse racing, oil and gas development and apparel manufacturing. His business interests and hobbies led him to travel to many exotic places. He was friends to many including artists, musicians and sports figures from the Bay area during an exciting time. His friends included the likes of Jim Stuckey of the San Francisco 49'ers, the Grateful Dead family and the poster artists of the era. He moved to ABQ in 1987, stayed for ten years, left for awhile and moved back in early 2009. Dallas was a loving father to his children and they were always a big part of his heart. He spent many hours with his children in the months preceding his death and it filled his cup to the brim he was very happy and proud of them all. Dallas will always be remembered by his good nature, his smile and his boyish grin. His remains will be scattered in Petaluma, CA; buried in Nebraska, and a portion will remain in view of the Sandia Mountains in a niche at the Centennial Urn Garden at Sunset Memorial Park in ABQ, NM. Interment is pending. We thank our friends at French Mortuary for all their help and consideration, and to the wonderful staff at the VA Hospital who took great care of Dallas.
