Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday August 19, 2009

Bob Schumacher passed away August 14, 2009 age 76, after a courageous battle with declining health. He is survived by his devoted wife Lou who cared for him 16 years in his wheelchair. Also survived by daughter Alisa and husband Bob, daughter Cathy and husband Frank, daughter Donna; Sons Steve and Robby, and Lori and Michael; Grandchildren are Robby, Bailey, Sara, Buddy and Jessica, Waymon, Chris and Josiah. Also nine great-grandchildren. Best doggie pal Bugsy misses Bob terribly. Bob was born in Amarillo, TX in 1932 to Phil and Lela Ray Schumacher. He attended NMMI in Roswell, excelling in sports and graduating in 1951. From there he joined the U.S. Navy, spending four years in Japan as a radio tech and boxing Golden Gloves, becoming a lightweight champion title holder. He then returned to ABQ to work alongside his dad at the building he built downtown at 2nd St. and Grand, the Tower Plaza. At the time at seven stories, it was the first 'skyscraper' to grace the city's skyline. Later Bob began a career at American Furniture for more than 20 years. He met Lou, the love of his life, and soon married her in 1969, along with her four children. Bob and Lou loved to go out dancing, and travel to Las Vegas and Laughlin, NV. Bob played golf and shot pool like a pro. He had quick wit and exercised his mind with crossword puzzles and Trivial Pursuit. He especially loved Frank Sinatra. In the 80's Bob and Lou returned to the Tower Plaza to manage the building. After selling the building, they retired to a nice home in the heights with an indoor pool to rehab Bob's spine. Bob took up woodworking with special tools and made many beautiful objects of art. Bob was a man's man who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
