Obituary for BROCK

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday May 29, 2009

Milford C Brock, known to his friends as "Brock," passed away peacefully on May 27, 2009 at the Las Palomas Care and Rehabilitation Community in Albuquerque. He is survived by his sister VaNeal; four children, Brian, Pam, Bret, and Stephanie; their spouses; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was born in Fyffe, Alabama on June 17, 1926. The Brock family moved to New Mexico during the Great Depression, and initially lived in a tent located in a hobo camp near the Rio Grande River. He attended Lincoln Jr. High and Albuquerque High. From 1949 through 1954, Brock was a popular local racecar driver, beginning in midgets at the Rio Grande Sports Bowl and culminating with back-to-back super modified championships at Speedway Park at age 28. He also won the coveted Southwest Super Modified Championship in 1954. After the 1954 season, he retired from racing to pay more attention to his family and his growing garage business. At age 48, he retired from the garage business and moved to Elephant Butte Lake where he lived until his failing health forced him to move into a nursing home in Albuquerque. Brock was a unique and colorful individual, loved and admired as a gifted mechanic, a tenacious competitor, an avid outdoorsman, a helpful neighbor, a good father and a man who took special interest in helping young men who shared his love of cars and racing. He also possessed a very quick wit that put smiles on numerous faces. Brock will be missed by his family and many friends in New Mexico and across the country, but he has even more friends now greeting him on the other side. Family and friends are invited to a casual open house in memory of Brock on Monday, June 1, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the home of Brian and Carol Brock, 8413 Yeager NE, Albuquerque, NM. No flowers please - just your favorite Brock stories.
