Emily Briggs, age 81, died May 20, 2009, in Albuquerque. She was born Emily Botts on June 8, 1927, in Clark Co., Kentucky, to Elmer Handsfort "Jack" and Ella Rhea Golden Botts. She was the widow of Jesse A. Briggs. Emily graduated from Mt. Sterling High School, then received a BA in English from Anderson College (now University) in Anderson, Indiana, and her M.A. from New Mexico State University. She was an elementary school teacher, first in Anthony, NM, then Orange County, CA, and she retired from the Albuquerque Public School system in 1992 after 24 years. She taught mostly the third and fourth grades at Alamosa and Collet Park Elementary Schools. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Robert Botts and William Botts. She is survived by her sister Catherine Christopher and husband Ernest of Winchester, KY, her brother Benny Botts and wife Edna of Richmond, KY; sister-in-law Betty Botts of Holt, MO; two daughters from her marriage to Joseph D. Blanchard: Jolie Blanchard Brown and husband John of Arlington, VA, and Roberta Busich of Albuquerque; her two granddaughters Andrea Busich and Reanna Alford; and a great-granddaughter Alyson Alford. Emily was a supporter of education and the arts. She had the curiosity of a perpetual learner and educator. For many years until her death, she was an active member of Daughters of the Nile, where she served as Queen in 1999. She volunteered with the Albuquerque Natural History Museum and the Public Library, and supported the symphony and light opera. Her interests included science, natural history, art history, anthropology, pre-Columbian cultures, Egyptology, archeology and genealogy. She was an avid reader. Friends may visit French, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at Christ Unity Church, 9800 Candelaria Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM. A reception will follow Services at Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni Avenue, NW, Albuquerque, NM, 265-0800, Ext 100. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. Memorial contributions may be made by check to the Ballut Abyad Transportation Fund, Ballut Abyad Shrine Center, 6600 Zuni SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. The fund covers costs of transportation for children for treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children.
