Obituary for MEAD

Keith E., 86, passed away on April 19, 2009. He was born in western Kansas to Rev. Fred and Bessie Mead. He was preceded in death by his two older sisters, Alice and Wilma. Keith is survived by his wife of 29 years Judith; his three daughters Margaret Mead, Roberta Michaud and Barbara Shultz and her husband John; step-daughters Julia Garratt and her husband Michael and Catherine Silverman and her partner Sam Miners; grandchildren Patricia Holt, Daryl Hanes and wife Josie and Keith Augustus; step-grandson Steven White; and great-grandchildren Anthony and Kaycee Holt and Kaleb and Hannah Hanes. Keith graduated from Quinter High School in Quinter, KS, attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, was drafted into the Navy and went to OCS at Columbia University and upon being commissioned, he served in the Pacific Theater and in China until his discharge in 1946. Keith completed his university studies and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Steel Ring Honorary Society and the Pi Tau Sigma Honorary Mechanical Engineering Fraternity. Upon graduation he came to Albuquerque to teach at UNM. After teaching for three years, he continued his career at Sandia National Laboratories and retired after 38 years of service. Keith holds two US patents through his work at Sandia. Keith enjoyed the out-of-doors - especially hunting, fishing and water sports. He was a world class scuba diver and enjoyed the sport as he and Judith indulged their love of travel. He loved to garden and in later years loved to feed and watch the birds in his back yard. Keith was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a life member of the American Society of Metals. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and a Deacon, and was an 18 year member of the Chancel Choir. A Celebration of Keith's Life will be held Monday, May 18, 2009, 3:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust, NE, Memorial contributions may be made to the Music Ministry at First Presbyterian Church.
