Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday April 29, 2009

Helene Elizabeth (Stout) Mitchell, 89, long time resident of Albuquerque and more recently Los Lunas, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009. She is survived by her son, Charles Lyon and his wife, Betty of Los Lunas; sister, Nancy Burney and husband, George of Mesa, AZ; grandsons, Charles Lyon, Jr. and Sean Lyon of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Anne (Lyon) Bartolucci of Tucson, AZ; brother-in-law, William Stone of Amarillo, TX; daughter-in-law, Karen Sue Lyon of Hutcheson, KS; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren living in NM, AZ, NV, UT, TX and CA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Howard "Mitch" Joseph Mitchell; her parents, Charles and Daisy Stout; brothers, Frederick Stout and Thomas Stout; sister, Margery Stone; her first born son, William Lyon; and a grandson, Alan Lyon. Helene was born on November 8, 1919 in Los Angeles, CA and grew up in Winslow, AZ where her father was employed with the Santa Fe railroad. She graduated high school, married and returned to California where she gave birth to two sons. Her first marriage ended in divorce and while working as a single mom in Albuquerque in 1949 she met and married "Mitch", an Air Force man. During the many years of this marriage she enjoyed traveling to many duty stations within the US and overseas and meeting new friends. During WWII Helene at one time worked in a defense aircraft plant and was later employed as a Harvey Girl at the Harvey House in Gallup, NM. In the 1950s Helene became a Red Cross volunteer and received commendation for over 1,000 hours of work as a Gray Lady in USAF hospitals. Helene was drawn to God early in life and was baptized into the Episcopal Church in 1951, and received her confirmation and First Communion in 1952. Helene has let her faith guide her role in life, and in 1963 she joined St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Albuquerque. Over the ensuing years she became active in the lay ministry, serving 30 years as a Lay-Reader, Chalice Bearer, Acolyte, Lector, as an active member of the Alter Guild and a member of the order of the Daughters of the King (a religious order for laywomen of the Episcopal Church). One of her saddest days came when she became physically disabled and was no longer able to serve God at her church. Her faith was undiminished, and she continued to pray and read her Bible daily until her eyesight failed her in late 2008. Helene lived her final days with her son and daughter-in-law in Los Lunas, before becoming totally disabled, which required her being moved to a full-assisted senior living facility. It was there, on Saturday, April 25, 2009 Helene passed peacefully and went to meet the Lord she loved so dearly. Helene made many friends through her world travels and her service to her Lord, and she will be missed by all.
