John Knox Wooten, Jr, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 2005, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Lovelace Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Wooten; daughters Kathy and her husband, Ed, of Poughkeepsie, NY, Karol Martinez, of Albuquerque; grandson Jack Wooten of Santa Fe; granddaughter Amanda Lopez and her husband, Jeremy Lopez, of Pecos; grandson Matthew Boone, of Poughkeepsie, NY; great grandson Preston Wooten, of Santa Fe; sister, Charlotte Hallford, of Tulsa, OK; and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his son, John Knox Wooten, III (Jay) of Los Alamos, in 1991. John was born October 29, 1926, in Grandfield, Oklahoma. to John Knox Wooten, Sr. and Mattie Wooten. After high school, John enlisted in the Navy, where he served until the end of World War II. He attended the University of Tulsa, where he completed a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics and met Mary Sue Mullens, to whom he was happily married for 60 years. He completed an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science at UNM. He also studied at Cal Tech and USC and taught Computer Science at UNMLA. John worked at IBM and Boeing, before joining the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1956, where he had a long career and resided with his family for 48 years. At LASL, John worked in C and T Divisions and mentored many colleagues. John was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He and his wife enjoyed traveling widely and took their 26th cruise, to Hawaii, in February. John loved spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, and building furniture, and he played in the same poker club for 48 years. He served as president of Los Alamos Golf Club. John will be fondly remembered by his relatives and the many people who were fortunate to know and work with him. John will be buried at the Santa Fe National Cemetery Monday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Asbury United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, where he was a member. His family is very grateful for the excellent care he received from Dr. Amine Temmar and the ICU staff at Lovelace Hospital.
