Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday April 12, 2009

Fleta Lucille Owens-Crockett, 86, passed away March 28, 2009. She was born January 10, 1923, to the late Harry and Francis Lilly Collins- Owens, in Alma, Arkansas. "Mother Fleta", as she was affectionately known due to her love for everyone, grew up in a family of five children. Mother Fleta was only eight years old when her father died, and 16 years old when her mother passed. At that time the oldest brother, William, became father, mother, brother and breadwinner for the family. Because of William's unselfish sacrifices the family was kept together. Fleta was always grateful for his incredible love. One of the long-lasting memories she has is of her mother teaching her how to cook, and learn she did. In fact, that is what inspired Mother Fleta to choose food service as a career. She was known throughout the community for her baking skills. Mother Fleta's confections were the finest. In 1998, following the death of her beloved husband, Robert Crockett, she and her sister, Mary, moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Albuquerque to be near her daughter and son-in-law, whom she praised for the glowing love and care they bestowed on her. She is survived by her brother, Tommy Owens of Fort Smith, AR: her daughter, Fleta Maxine Jones and husband Craig of Albuquerque, NM; two grandchildren, Vanessa M. MacFarlane, of Dallas, TX, and Hugh (Geno) Jones and his wife Cindi of Edgewood, NM; three great grandsons, Victor LeAndre and Kyle David MacFarlane of Dallas, TX and Cory Lee Jones of Austin, TX; step-grandchildren, Dron Jones of Cottage Grove, OR, and Paula Jones of Albuquerque, NM; and a host of extended family and loved ones. Mother Fleta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Crockett; and three siblings, Truman Owens, Mary Alice Owens-Hunter, and William Owens. Bingo, working puzzles, and working in the yard were her favorite pass times; however, an occasional trip to the casino to visit the nickel slot machines could not be ruled out. In her youth, softball was her passion. Mother Fleta was the model of love for her family. She taught them to speak kindly of others, and never tolerated gossip. Mother Fleta was one who would pick up the phone just to say "I love you." She was a blessing for everyone who had the pleasure of even the briefest encounter with her.
