Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday March 24, 2009

Emily Torres Basila, 94, a life long resident of New Mexico, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at home. She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Browne; grandsons, Jhett Browne and wife, Jo and Lance Browne and wife, Melissa; great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Bailee, Jhett Kendall, Brittany, Brandon, Brieanna, and Brooke; one great-great grandson, Noah; siblings, Chon, Ted, Gilbert, Lillie, and Charlie Torres; her beloved dog Bridgett; and numerous other relatives and friends, especially Leticia her caregiver. Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Basila in 1970; sister, Rita Torres Smith; and brothers, Joe and Tony Torres. She was born on January 22, 1915 in Carthage, NM to Jose and Catalina Torres. During the depression her family moved to Albuquerque where she met Ralph and they were married in 1936. They owned and operated Ralph Basila Produce Company and Farmers Market, which are still family owned. Emily was a very self-willed and independent person who "did it her way" and we love her for it. She loved the Lord and was a member of Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque. Emily was a loving mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Her Life will be held Thursday, March 26, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum.
