Obituary for TORMA

Arpad Emil Torma, 76, passed away on March 10, 2009. He was born October 30, 1932 in Gyor, Hungary. He received his Bachelors of Sciences in Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland; his Masters in Sciences in Chemistry from Laval University, Quebec City, Canada; and his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He married Katalin Dobovari on September 24, 1960 in Zurich, Switzerland. They have two sons, Steven C. Torma and Gabriel A. Torma, both born in Quebec City, Canada. He was associated with the Quebec Department of Natural Resources as a Research Scientist where he became head of the Division of Extractive Metallurgy. Thereafter, he joined the Metallurgy Department of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, as Professor of Metallurgy, where he also served as Dean of Engineering, Director of the State Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute (Mineral Institute) and Director of the Sullivan Center for In-situ Mining Research. In 1990, he joined the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, EG&G Idaho Inc, Idaho Falls, ID, as a Principal Engineer in the Center for Biological Processing Technology. In 1993, he joined National Technical Systems Inc., in Los Angeles, CA as Vice President and General Manager. At the end of 1994, he took his retirement. He has authored or co-authored about 240 reviewed articles including nine books and has 13 patents in the areas of Extractive Metallurgy, Biohydrometallurgical Processing, and Bioremediation of contaminated soils and materials. Arpad was an avid table tennis player and enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife Katalin; his son Steven C. Torma, his wife Patricia A. Torma and their children Nicholas P. Torma and Jacqueline M. Torma and his son Gabriel A. Torma, his wife Michelle C. Torma and their son Zachary S. Torma; as well as by his sister Edith and her son Zoltan; and his nice Klara and nephew Laszlo, residing in Hungary. A Rosary was held at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2009 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Rd SE, Rio Rancho.
