Obituary for YORK

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday February 07, 2009

Arthur A. York, 92, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha; daughters, Anne E. York and husband, Harvey Friedman, Kathy York Haaland and husband, David, Susan Lee York and husband, Chris Worth, and Wendy E. York and husband, Stephen McCue. Mr. York is also survived by three grandchildren, Ryan Haaland, Maggie Worth and Alex McCue; and numerous other family and friends. Arthur retired from the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII and Korea. He then went to work at Sandia National Labs as a Reliability Engineer before retiring after 21 years. Mr. York received his Bachelors Degree from the University of New Mexico the same year as his daughter Anne. Art York believed most strongly in the power of education and that his girls could do anything. He encouraged books and discouraged boys. He also believed that he didn't want to waste his life in front of the television and built not one, but two, sailboats in his garage in Albuquerque. His most recent goal was to vote in the presidential election-a goal that he happily reached. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and was so very proud of his daughters. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009, 2:00 p.m., at La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima de Oro NE. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur, Martha & Alice York Endowed Scholarship, UNM Foundation, MSC074260, 1 University of New Mexico, 87131-0001. Cremation has taken place.
