Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 01, 2009

William Harris McAtee, 74, recently passed away at home. "Papa Bill" was born and raised in Mingo, West Virginia, and he was Valedictorian of Tygart Valley High School. After two years pursuing his engineering degree at West Virginia University, he joined the United States Army, serving three years in the Signal Corps in Alaska during the Korean War. He then continued his education in Kansas City at Central Technical Institute, where he received his Associates Degree in Electronics after graduating 1st in his class. He was then hired by Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, where he worked for 31 years. While at Sandia, Bill worked on projects related to nuclear energy, including the Saturn and Hermes III projects. He also worked on solar energy projects, and was one of the original operators of the Solar Tower. When not working, Bill could usually be found at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course, where he pursued his love of golf. His friends will remember his love of family, his lifelong interest in learning new things, and his integrity. His word was his bond. Papa Bill is survived by his son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Jody; and grandsons, Colin and Blake of Del Mar, CA; and his sister, Mary Alice McAtee of Elkins, WV. The family will hold a private memorial service near the Torrey Pines Golf Course overlooking Black's Beach and the Pacific Ocean in San Diego. "Papa Bill, we will always miss you."
