Obituary for LANDAU

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday January 10, 2009

Charlotte Rubenstein Landau born June 29, 1929 died after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband, Marvin, preceded her in death. Mrs. Landau is survived by her daughter Laura and son-in-law Larry Gabbert of Yorktown, Indiana, their son Michael and daughter-in-law Shoshannah of Pottstown, PA her daughter Vickie Donovan and grandson Jason of East Longmeadow, MA and two great-grandchildren, Emelia and Terra Gabbert, the daughter of her heart Lorraine Dominguez Stubblefield, son-in-law Gary Stubblefield and grandson Lorrenzo from Rio Rancho. Mrs. Landau was originally from Brooklyn, NY and relocated to Rio Rancho in 1982. She was an educator, initially teaching in NY and later In Rio Rancho and Albuquerque Public Schools. She received her Master's Degree in Art from Brooklyn College. She had four different licenses to teach in New Mexico. However, she preferred teaching Special Education and Art. As an educator, Mrs. Landau worked hard to make a difference to all the students she taught. Mrs. Landau was an artist, and drew oil landscapes and paintings that were in exhibits in New York, at the Museum of New Mexico, Coronado State Monument and NM State Fairgrounds. Mrs. Landau also served as Rio Rancho City Councilor in the early 1990's. Some of her accomplishments during her tenure were: raised fine for illegal handicap parking, installed another disabled curb cut at City Hall, expanded Department of Motor Vehicle hours in Rio Rancho, pushed to use Lincoln Mid-School for community adult and children's classes, reduced contract length for trash haulers, and insisted on a yearly performance survey to rate trash haulers. She was a loyal Democrat, and served as a delegate and member of the Democratic Party. Mrs. Landau served on many boards and organizations to improve the quality of life for Rio Rancho. She was a wealth of public information and her contributions also benefited our State. Mrs. Landau truly believed that if you did not vote you had no right to complain about anything. She assimilated very easily with everyone in Sandoval County and especially Pueblo Natives where she embraced their traditions and attended every feast day she could. The family would like to give special thanks to all the staff and residents from Sandia Springs, Atria Vista Del Rio, Vista Care Hospice and Adela Garduno. You were all so kind and caring to Charlotte and her family. A Memorial will be held at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd., N.E. Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Vista Care Hospice or the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, #300, 87111.
