Obituary for SAYLOR

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday December 20, 2008

Doris Annette Gable Saylor was born February 15, 1926 to Ralph and Barbara Gable in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Her family moved to Reading, Pennsylvania and at age 12, she met Richard G. Saylor, the love of her life and who remained her very best friend for 70 years. Doris graduated from Reading High School. She was a voracious reader, had a penchant for lifelong learning accompanied by a rare and precise memory and facility for spelling and the English language. She was married on October 12, 1946 after Richard returned from the South Pacific after serving in the Navy during World War II. Their young love grew and they were blessed with two children, Susan born in Reading, Pennsylvania and Richard born in Anchorage, Alaska and ultimately six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Doris loved to travel and over the next 30 years as the committed wife of a career military officer, she lived in Louisiana, California, Washington, Texas, New York, Italy, Hawaii, Arizona, and New Mexico. She was enamored with culture, old world art and architecture, music, children, dogs and always, her precious children. She was Den Mother of her son's Cub Scout Pack 5 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Whether her children or grandchildren were playing in the band, playing in a soccer or baseball game, receiving an Honor Society pin or Ph.D. she was ALWAYS there. She commemorated birthdays, anniversaries and family achievements with special dinners, delicious cakes and went to extraordinary lengths to assure attendance by every family member and friends. Her environment was filled with angels with whom she held a special affinity that she shared with her Daughter-in-Law Susan. Her family was her life. After Richard retired from the military after 32 years of service, Doris and Dick joined the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program and traveled across the United States numerous times in their various motor homes building orphanages, churches and volunteering time and resources to help those in need. Doris was a member of The Zia Romers and The Good Sam Club, DAV 32, and she was a volunteer at the VA Hospital for years. To Doris, it mattered not what language you spoke, what color you were, or where you were from, you were always met coming and going with a vibrant hug, a big smile, a kind word and a plate of food and treats for others. She so loved people and had a propensity for helping others especially those in need, and children. Our precious mother, wife, and friend passed away December 18, 2008 peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by love and admiration for the woman she is and the exemplary life she lived. In lieu of flowers, please send any remembrance of Doris Saylor to Presbyterian Hospice Foundation, 8300 Constitution NE, 87110 for those in need without insurance.
