Obituary for TOWNES

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 30, 2008

Billy Ernest Townes, 89, passed away November 18, 2008, following a long illness. He died peacefully in his sleep at home. Bill was preceded in death by his five brothers and four sisters, son Gerald, daughter Crystal and great grandson Cody. He was born September 9, 1919, on the dry lands near Lamar, Colorado. Bill lost his right arm in an ensilage cutter accident at age 2. The loss of his arm never slowed him down. He often said "I wouldn't know what to do with another one". He was a graduate of the Colorado College of Pharmacy and was licensed to practice in Colorado and Nevada until 1999. In 1956 he hired on as manager of a wholesale drug firm in Wichita, KS. He transferred to its Albuquerque facility in 1960. Bill retired in 1970 and entered commercial real estate brokerage. He "had a ball" in that business for 35 years. Bill invested in and managed numerous commercial properties in the metro area and maintained his downtown office until death. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 67 years; children Ronald, Stephanie, Timothy and wife Kathleen, Andrew and wife Rhonda; grandchildren Ronald Jr., Rhonda, Robyn, Allison, DeeLynn and Drew; great grandchildren Brandon, Michael, Kasey, Megan, Jonah and Jakob. Dad's beloved cousin and cribbage opponent Paul Youngblood, his lifelong friend, David Batchelor, and longtime friends Norm and Ellie Hammergren were very much loved by him. We remain ever faithful and thank God for Bill's 89 years with us. Respecting his wishes, no public Service will be held. Dad's ashes will be scattered at the family compound near La Cueva, NM, high in the Jemez Mountains. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Diabetes Association in Bill's name.
