Obituary for CALT

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday November 19, 2008

Owen Francis. On Saturday, November 15, 2008, his guardian angel tapped Owen on his heart and whispered: son of County Mayo, Ireland, we have been together on this earth since May 21, 1909. It is time to return to the Trinity from whence you came. They went. Owen sailed from Eire (where he never heard of corned beef and cabbage) then on to Chicago just in time for the Great Depression. He met a dancing partner and future wife, Bridget Mary O'Halloran. She was sure (Calt) wasn't Irish, but he did have his Owen car. As listed below, they raised five children, all who will kneel before his mortal remains. Owen retired from the Chicago Transit Authority. They then followed Eugene to Albuquerque. Mary left Owen and the rest of us for Heaven in January 2000. Owen was a self-taught Do-It-Yourself plumber, carpenter and electrician. He needed supervision over automotives, a paint brush and his personal safety. He was a no-nonsense dad with a thundering velvet hand. A roster of his immediate family reads thus: daughter, Catherine and husband Jim (PA) and their families of PA, NJ, and MI; sons, Eugene and his wife Jean and James and his wife Christine; daughter, Doretta; and son, Kevin Calt (Albuquerque); grandchildren, Robert (NJ) and James Neubauer (MI); Mary Kay Dolnack (DE); Brian and Dan Calt (Albuquerque); Stephanie Otte (CO); Shannon, Shayne and Shawna Calt (AK). Owen and Mary have eight great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be conducted Thursday, November 20, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 21, 2008, at 8:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Church, Claremont and Vermont Streets NE. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Following the interment, a brunch will be served at Magdelene Hall, 2611 Utah NE.
