Obituary for SUTHERLAND

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 16, 2008

Sharon A. Sutherland, 19, died unexpectedly on November 5, 2008 at Ft. Bragg, NC while serving in the US Army. Miss Sutherland was born on December 20, 1988 to Joe and Leah Sutherland of Albuquerque, NM. From an early age, it was easy to see she was a social butterfly and free spirit. Sharon brought a smile to her family's face when she adamantly stated, "I didn't do it! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!" Miss Sutherland's dream was to use her G.I. Bill and become an elementary school science teacher. Sharon deeply loved and cared for people. She encouraged others to share their joys, worries, and concerns with her. She strived to lessen the burden of others. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and attended Bellingham (WA) Technical College. She joined the US Army at the age of 18 in order to "do something" with her life. Miss Sutherland has served one tour in Iraq and was a soldier through and through. She served as an Airborne Parachute Rigger, Patriot Missile Monitor and Maintenance, and recently earned her Maroon Beret. She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Armenta Lorraine Latin; and great-grandfather, David Edward Wilkinson. Miss Sutherland is survived by her parents, Joe and Leah Sutherland; a brother, Edward "J.J." Sutherland; grandparents, Paul "Pappy" and Sharon "Grandma" Roberts, and Paul Latin; great-grandmother, Alice Wilkinson; aunts and uncles, Richard and Linda Anderson and family, Rodney and Valerie Lambert and family, David Wilkinson, Jimi Wilkinson, Brett and Lori Rhea and family, Randy Wilkinson, William and Crystal Davis IV, Michelle Sandoval, Lori Sutherland and family, Sandy Lee and family, Bill and Kathy Rudd and family, Marilee Altimere and family, and Jake and Susie Lux and family; with many great aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss her so much. The visitation is pending at this time. The Memorial Service, with full Military Honors, will be held on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Palm Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services, 1100 Coal Ave SE with Pastor Warren Chapman, US Army Ret.
