Obituary for PEPPER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 16, 2008

Joan Estelle (Baker) Pepper was born in Ithaca, NY, on October 19, 1932. She was the daughter of Frank Sherman Baker and Mabel Louise (Kouf) Baker. Joan spent many of her early years in the Easton, PA. area. She graduated from Wilson High school (in Easton) in 1950. On January 12, 1958, she married Russell Earl Pepper, of Easton. The family lived in Easton and Harrisburg, Pa., and then moved to the Chicago area. After the boys grew up, Joan and Russ began traveling the southern states, from Arizona to Florida, and in the summer of 1983, fell in love with, and settled in Albuquerque, NM. Russ died in Albuquerque on April 4, 1984, and is buried in Easton, Pa. Joan traveled some, to Pennsylvania, and to the Chicago area, and then permanently settled in Albuquerque. She loved the area, and always felt that "Russ's spirit is in the mountains of Albuquerque." Her later years brought on some health problems, but she stayed strong and independent until the end of her days. She passed away peacefully in the early hours Tuesday, November 11, 2008, with her family at her side. She will be buried in Northampton Shrine, in Easton, PA, next to her beloved husband Russ, and son Jeff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Earl Pepper; and her son, Jeff Scott Pepper, who died in Chicago on November 1, 1988. Joan is survived by her sister, Betty Lee, who lives in Lady Lake, FL; sister-in-law, Joan (Cassel) Pepper, of Mechanicsburg; and by two sons, David Wayne Pepper and wife, Mary (Glennon) Pepper, of Albuquerque, NM, and Frank Gregg Pepper and wife, Sheri (Wakem) Pepper, of Fayetteville, GA. Joan is also survived by nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 in Easton, PA.
