Betty Alberta Smith Gilbert, 67, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2008. She was born March 27, 1941 on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, in Hoopa, CA to Arthur Albert Smith, member of the Salish and Kootenai Nation, and Hazel Wixon, a descendant Cree. She is survived by her son, Terry Hatfield and his wife, Sheila Gorman, caretaker and loving daughter in law; her daughter Mellissa Gilbert; and her sister, Jaune Quick-to See Smith, member of the Salish and Kootenai Nation and Jaune's husband F. Andrew Ambrose, all of Albuquerque. Betty has two nephews, Bill Ambrose and Neal Ambrose-Smith, and their families, all living in the Albuquerque area, as well as a niece, Roxanne Ambrose, who lives on the Salish and Kootenai reservation in Montana. She was preceded in death by her partner, Edward Lee. Betty had a great love for all her animals. A private service was held.
