Obituary for GONZALES

Mary Victoria (Ulivarri) Gonzales went to meet her savior on Sunday, October 19, 2008, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her six children, Elizabeth Gonzales-Hughes and husband Max, Ida Gonzales, Claudio Gonzales and wife, Margaret, David Gonzales and wife, Rafaelita, Catherine "Cat" McCarthy and husband Mike, Roberta Rehberg and husband Stephen; 14 fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dona Maria was born on Saturday, February 20, 1932. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claudio; her parents, Luis and Lucia Ulivarri; three sisters, Rufugio Carriaga, Fabiola Gabaldon, Emilia Maese; half brother, Felix Carriaga; half sister, Sandra Gallegos. Mary is survived by her sister, Luisa Carrillo and brother, Louis Ulivarri; half brother, Adam Carriaga and brother-in-law, Richard Maese. Mary attended Lew Wallace Elementary, Washington Junior High, Albuquerque High School and the University of Albuquerque. She retired from the Physical Plant group at UNM in 1997. Mary extended her love to her grandchildren Naomi and Daniel Schmierer, Daryl Gonzales, Juan and Sebastian Enrique Gonzales, Teresita Maria Gonzales, Sherri Gonzales, Joanie Garcia, and Adan Gonzales, Leonard and Jarred Armijo, Isaac Rehberg, Aaron Rehberg and Sarah Rehberg. Her great-grandchildren are Liam and Khaia Schmierer, Audrie Anna Gonzales-Ellsworth, Amariz and Soledad Garcia, Tenayah, and Puriel Rehberg as well as long-time friend Rita Trujillo. Maria was baptized, confirmed and married in the San Felipe de Neri Church in Old Town. She remained an active member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church where her funeral mass will be celebrated. She served as a CCD teacher, Lector, and most recently a Eucharistic Minister to the home bound. She was also a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Catholic Charismatic Movement. Mary was an adamant team mother to her son's junior high teams, a Cub Scout den mother, treasurer and later President of the La Luz Elementary School PTA as well as a member of the APS Northwest PTA council during the 1960's. Mary will be most remembered for her life's mantra "Never Give Up". She leaves us a large legacy with big shoes to fill. Rosary will be held Thursday, October 23, 2008, at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel at 6:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated Friday, October 24, 2008 at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
