Robert C. Cox was born in Las Cruces on February 12, 1922 and passed away in Las Cruces on October 10, 2008. Rob was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Fannie Cox; and two brothers, William and Jay. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn (Murnie); three sons, Robert and wife Helen, James, Mark and wife Kathy; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Rob grew up on the San Augustine Ranch, was a star athlete for Las Cruces High School, and was a member of the National Champion Stock Judging team. He attended Texas A & M University but had that education interrupted by World War II. He joined the Army and was assigned to the 8th Armored Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was awarded two Silver Star medals for gallantry in action as well as a Purple Heart when wounded in battle. He completed his degree at Texas A&M at the war's end. After the war, Rob returned to the life of a cattleman, rancher, and cowboy. He ranched in Winston for 30 years, served as a Sierra County Commissioner, was a director on the Hot Springs National Bank board, and served on the New Mexico Constitutional Convention of 1970. Rob returned to take over the San Augustine Ranch in 1976 after selling the Winston ranch. He devoted the rest of his life to his family and the ranch life, the "way of life" that he loved. A Memorial Service will be held at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 19, 2008. Memorial donations may be made to the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum.
