Obituary for SHATTUCK

August George Shattuck, 93, a lifelong member and resident of Isleta Pueblo, died Thursday, September 18, 2008. He is survived by his sisters and brother, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Shattuck is preceded in death by his wife Hella Shattuck, and his parents. Mr. Shattuck was born April 10, 1915 in Isleta Pueblo to his parents Paul Shattuck and Maria Beatrice Abeita (maiden name). After graduating from Highland University in 1942, he worked as an instructor in the Vocational Department for the University. He also was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and taught at the Zuni Day School and Santa Fe Indian School. He received a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and traveled as a health educator for the U.S. Indian Health Service, which he served the Albuquerque Service area. He served as a Tribal Affairs Officer serving the many Native American communities, also as a consultant on the New Mexico Commission on Alcoholism and was appointed by Governor Garrey Carruthers in 1977 to the State Mental Health Advisory Board. He was very active during his retirement as he served on the National Advisory Committee on Aging, the New Mexico Council on Aging and the City of Albuquerque's Senior Task Force. August will be missed by his family.
