Obituary for GILLESPIE

Delmer K. Gillespie, of Albuquerque departed this Earth September 12, 2008. He was born in Reydon, OK to Roy and Paulene Harris Gillespie on September 28, 1925. Delmer moved to Portales, NM in early 1938, along with his family. He served in the Pacific in WWII in the US Navy aboard LST 558. He then attended three colleges (one semester in Mexico), graduating from ENMU in 1951 with a BA in English and Spanish. After teaching for two years, Delmer worked for the NM HSSD, retiring in 1986 having served as County Director for several counties and as District Director for the period that districts were formed. During his time with HSSD, he attended both Florida State and San Diego State Universities, earning an MA in Social Services. Delmer was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leonard and Dale; sister Theda Rupe; and "special niece" Linda Perkins. He is survived by son Benjamin P.Gillespie; sisters Charlotte Burk of Yucaipa, CA, Flo Miller of Lubbock, TX; brother Ben J. Gillespie of Albuquerque; many nieces and nephews; and two special sisters-in-law. Delmer was a man of many talents and a great humanitarian and will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Cremation has taken place and a private Family Service will be held at a later date.
