Obituary for SKENDER

Mildred Skender, 89, born and raised in the Northern New Mexico coal mining town of Dawson, died August 15, 2008. Preceding her in death were her parents, Matt and Anna Skender; a brother, Louis; a sister, Catherine Corazza; and several siblings who died in infancy. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Brandolino; and two brothers, Mike Skender (wife Jane), and Tony Skender; in addition, nieces and nephews. A retired nurse, Mildred graduated from the Minnequa School of Nursing at Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, CO, (now the St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center). In gratitude to the Colorado community for what she considered a fine education, she practiced in Pueblo at the hospital for three years after graduation. She served as a nurse in World War II, entering service through the Red Cross as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. After leaving active service she practiced in a variety of places, notably Juneau, Alaska, the year that it became a State (1959). She was a quiet and modest woman who was a great walker until her eyesight deteriorated in her last years. Viewing will be from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 3113 Carlisle Boulevard, followed by the Mass of Celebration. Interment will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clarence Bass, Matthew Bass, Dennis Brandolino, John Castonguay, Kenneth Corazza, Mike Skender, and Tony Skender.
