Obituary for JUSTUS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 10, 2008

Addalene (Peggy) Starrett Justus, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2008, at the age of 85. Peggy, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, is survived by her daughter, Laura Justus (Smith McClure) of Minnetonka, MN; son, Eddie Justus (Anita) of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Vanessa and Haley McClure and Clinton and Marlowe Justus; sister, Louise Stapleton of San Antonio, TX; nieces, Carolyn Stapleton and Janet Todd; and nephew, John Lindsey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughan Justus; her daughter and caretaker, Mary Louise Andazola; and her sister, Mary Jo Lindsey. Peggy was a sweet and gentle soul, who loved her family, her friends, and playing bridge. She graduated from the original Albuquerque High School and UNM, and was a tireless booster of all things about Albuquerque. Peggy was a member of UNM's Town Club and was an active Town Club alumnae for years. She also belonged to UNM's Heritage Club. Peggy attended First United Methodist Church her whole life, where she and Vaughan were active in the Twosome Club, and she was a Stephen Minister. She also loved the basics of the political process, and for many years worked at the polls every election day, where she loved seeing her neighbors come to vote. Peggy belonged to several bridge clubs, some for over 65 years. She was very loyal to her many bridge friends, and she took great joy in teaching others how to play bridge. Another of her joys was traveling the United States with Vaughan when he was an officer in the Fraternal Order of Hoo-Hoo International, and she was instrumental in organizing their international convention in Albuquerque in 1966. We will remember Peggy as a loving mom and grandmother, who was always available for a late night chat, some words of wisdom, or a game of cards. Services will be held Saturday, August 16, 2008, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
