Margaret Ellen Mateczun was born Margaret Ellen Costello on a homestead in the Estancia Valley near Stanley, New Mexico, on June 10th 1918 as the 3rd of 6 children. During the Great Depression she lived with cousins in Albuquerque and attended St. Mary's High School where she graduated in 1936. She was married to Alfred Joseph Mateczun who came to New Mexico from Chicago, Illinois, and worked as an industrial arts teacher and elementary school principal for the Albuquerque Public School System until his death in 1971. During World War II she moved with her sisters to California where they worked in war related industries while her husband was overseas before returning to New Mexico where she raised her two sons. Margaret had an abiding interest in genealogy and was well known by relatives for authoring histories of the Costello and Mateczun families. She had a gift for solving puzzles of all sorts and was known to have a green thumb and gardened every year of her life. As a daughter of pioneers she was fiercely independent and lent a friendly ear to all who ever met her. She was beloved by family, neighbors and all those who came to her in times of trouble. A life long Roman Catholic she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and had a special devotion to Mary. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Alfred Mateczun and his wife, Cody and Dr. John Mateczun and his wife, Betsy and by five grandchildren, Alfred, Laura, Erin, Adam and Jenny. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Mateczun and one grandson, Kevin.
