Obituary for MORGAN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday May 03, 2008

Paula Morgan, friend of the desert and sea, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008, surrounded by love and friendship. Paula was born August 6, 1946 in Cheyenne, WY, the third daughter of William and Evelyn Morgan. The family later moved to Santa Monica, CA where Paula became an early volunteer of the VISTA program and developed a lifetime dedication to working for social and environmental justice. Paula also met the love of her life, soul mate, Thomas McClelland, and they were married on September 13, 1974. This began a union of passion, friendship, adventure, play and so much love. They shared over 30 years, dividing their time between Albuquerque, NM and St. Thomas, VI; depicting their mutual love of the desert and the ocean. Together, they founded the River Ranger Program and the Reef Ranger Program in Albuquerque and St. Thomas respectively. These programs were dedicated to creating awareness and appreciation in young people about the need to protect our rivers and our oceans and reefs through hands-on educational programs and experiences. The Reef Rangers won the "International Environmental Excellence Prize" in 1999. Paula received her Masters in Education from UNM in 1989, graduating Summa cum Laude, along with many other awards and honors. She was an inspired writer, teacher, photographer, filmmaker, and explorer of "wild places." Paula's life is defined by her insatiable appetite for fun, adventure, swimming, and learning; an unwavering loyalty and love of her dear Thom, her friends, family, and animals, along with a tenacious altruistic spirit that never allowed her to stop pursuing her ideals and dreams. Paula was preceded in death by sisters, Ann and Lynda and her beloved husband, Thom. She is survived by her adored Springer Spaniel, Chloe, and a multitude of friends she has touched through her laughter, her generous heart, and her brilliant light. A Memorial Service will be held at UNM Alumni Chapel this Sunday, May 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. followed by reception to celebrate Paula's spirited life and reunion with Thom. In lieu of flowers, Paula would appreciate donations to the Animal Humane Association or an environmental advocacy group of your choice.
