Obituary for DEVOLDER

Arthur L. DeVolder, age 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1962, died on Friday, April 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Jean E. DeVolder, in 1981 and son, L. Scott DeVolder, in 1988. He is survived by his sons, Peter L. Welch, and wife, Jackie, of Pagosa Springs, CO and Mark J. DeVolder and wife, Barbara, of Los Alamos; daughter, Anne C. Tarleton and husband, Glen Michael, of Taos; grandchildren, Christy Tarleton, Tracy Tarleton, and Derek Welch; great-granddaughter, Brandy McKneely; and brothers, Maurice DeVolder and wife, Martha, of Sebring, FL, and Rene DeVolder and wife, Alice, of Tucson, AZ. Arthur was born in South Bend, IN, received BS in Public Administration from Indiana University; BSLS from University of Denver; MA in Government and Citizenship at University of New Mexico. He was a librarian at Tacoma, WA Public Library, Chico State Library, University of Oregon Library, Twin Falls, ID Public Library, and University of New Mexico Library. While at UNM, he was an Associate Professor, Assistant Dean of Technical Services, Acting Dean of Library Services and later, Curator of the John Gaw Meem Collection. Arthur retired from UNM in 1978. He was a member of the Idaho State Library Association, Pacific Northwest Library Association, New Mexico Library Association, Albuquerque Library Association, and Southwest Library Association. He published many articles and several books, including "A Woodworker's Library", "Guadalupe Victoria", and "Santa Maria Mission at McCartys, NM". He was an avid woodworker and operated ArtCraft studio for a number of years. Art loved to dance and spent many happy hours on the dance floor with his very special friend, Shirley Allen. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 9, 2008 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas NE. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
