Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday March 27, 2008

Lyle Christopher Luke Losack, 51, passed away Monday, March 24, 2008 at his home in Corrales after battling with an undiagnosed illness. Lyle C. Losack, P.E., was born October 17, 1956 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His family moved to El Paso, Texas in 1960 while his father, Johnnie Losack, worked at White Sands Missile Range. All available spare time was spent in Corrales, NM to work his Grandmother Dulcelina Curtis's farm. The farm was founded in 1889 by his great-grandparents, the Salces, who immigrated from Italy. The immigrants hand-plowed the first drainage ditch in Corrales. This drainage system was used to drain off unusable swampland water to make the land usable for farming. In his early years, Lyle gained valuable knowledge in raising horses and other livestock, pruned, maintained and picked apples from the now 62-year-old trees that his grandparents planted. Lyle learned flood damage control through irrigation on the farm. They grew vegetables and native chili, which was his grandmother's specialty crop. He hoed rows and rows of Chile plants - that gave him the sense of fair and honorable work ethics. His love of building and design started in early childhood and carried throughout his life. His 8th grade science fair project was a passive solar design. The teachers in his high school architecture class would make up problems for him to do and would have him solve real-world problems and designs for El Paso architects. He volunteered to join the Navy in 1975 and served for 5 years. During this military service he was stationed in the Gulf War. There he excelled in training on boiler, pump, turbine systems and damage control. Lyle was very proud to have served his country and very supportive of our soldiers. After an honorable discharge from active duty, he retuned to Corrales to attend the University of New Mexico for an engineering degree. He graduated with a BSCE in Civil Engineering with Construction Management Option in 1986. The love of Architecture and Design gave him the life-long mission to design and hand-build his custom solar glass residence in Corrales. He was a Civil Engineer with more than twenty-two years of engineering related experience in planning a design of roadways, flood control levees and channels, sewer and drainage systems, airport aprons and hangers, construction utility and grading plans, structural design, subdivisions, all aspects of residential construction, field inspection, soils labs, cement batching plants, mechanical HVAC, fire protection, plumbing, pump, turbine, and boiler systems and owned his own business, QuickDraw Engineering, L.L.C. located in Corrales, NM. QuickDraw Engineering LLC was started in 2001. It expanded to meet the growing needs of his clientele. His clientele included DR Homes, Centex and Pulte Homes - and many others. The projects ranged from Subdivision master plans, including site, grading and drainage, road profile, and inspection work. Numerous projects were completed with COA, Bernalillo County, and the City of Rio Rancho. His early professional experience was expansive and led to projects locally, multi-state and internationally. Clients included NASA, DOE, DOD, DOI, Raytheon, Sandia and Los Alamos Labs. Runways, aprons and hangars were designed for Tonopah Test Site. He designed the Los Alamos HAZ waste treatment facility and YUCCA Mountain Storage Facility. His biggest international project was Bikini Atoll Master Plan, which included utilities, power systems, runways, and rain catchment systems to reclaim the property for the islanders from the Nuclear Test program. Lyle recently helped move his ex-mother-in-law into his home so that he and his ex-wife could care for her. Lyle was known for helping others in need. Lyle is survived by his son, Christopher Losack; daughter-in-law, Michelle DeMar Losack, ex-wife, Kim Elliott; mother, Evelyn Curtis Losack; sister, Joneve Bender; brothers, Mark and Vincent Losack; two nieces; four nephews; and one grand-niece; all of Corrales, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
