Obituary for KURCABA

Joseph M. Kurcaba, 87, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on February 19, 2008. He was born in Utica, New York on September 25, 1920. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1963. Mr. Kurcaba attended Utica College and was a graduate of Stewart Tech School of Aeronautics. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. as a combat pilot in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He was an avid sportsman throughout his life participating in and frequently winning trophies for his play in basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, bowling, and softball. Following his retirement from General Electric, he especially enjoyed golfing, social dancing, ping pong, and his roles as extras in several movies. Mr Kurcaba was active in Senior Olympics. He started the Senior Golf League at Tijeras Arroyo and Bear Canyon. He was a member of the American Legion Post #49, VFW Post #10763, and The DAV Post #32. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; his daughters, and their husbands, Barbara and Kevin Kunz, of Albuquerque, Peggy and Ruben Pena of Wilcox, AZ, and JoAnn and Mark Mellone, of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Vanessa and Michael Mellone; sister, Frances Kurcaba of Utica, NY; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Patty Kurcaba on May 10, 1974; and his sisters, Katherine, Stella, and Mary. Graveside Services with full Military Honors to be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery, on Tuesday February 26 at 2:30 p.m. A celebration of his life with his family and friends will be held at 12912 Manitoba Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2008.
