Obituary for HAYS

Michael J. Hays, 64, a resident of Chama, NM, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in an accident at the Brazos Canyon Fire Station. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ramona Hays; children, Lara Hays and husband, Edwin Carmack, of Wenatchee, WA, and Heather Hays-King and husband, Aaron King, of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Aidan, Avery, and Gavin King, and Nathan Carmack; sister, Patricia Wilson and husband, Jim, of Yukon, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Michael was born in Oklahoma City, OK on August 15, 1943 to C. Powell and Frances Hays. He graduated from Putnam City Schools in Bethany, OK. Michael entered the United States Navy where he served honorably for 21 years. He worked as a general building contractor in Albuquerque and Chama for twenty years. For the last 5 years, he was Fire Chief at the Brazos Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and was very instrumental in the formation of that station. Michael served as an active EMT/B with La Clinica del Pueblo in Tierra Amarilla. He was an active hobbyist in leatherworking, genealogy, quilting, geology, and model trains. Michael had a spirit to serve and had a very strong work ethic. He was a caring husband, father, and grandfather, having a loving eye for his family. Michael will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at El Meson Tabernacle in Chama, NM Monday, February 25, 2008, 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brazos Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, HC75, Box 92, Chama, NM 87520 to continue and rebuild the work which he began.
