Obituary for ROMERO

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 10, 2008

Ignacio J. Romero, age 87, Santa Fe, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 7, 2008. He was born on July 31, 1920 in Colonias, NM, to Tomas S. Romero and Benedita Martinez. Ignacio married Eliza Hoehne, of Colonias, in 1945, but they were residents of Santa Fe since 1948, and both heavily involved in volunteer work with their church and other community organizations. Ignacio and Eliza were blessed with six children. Eliza preceded him in death this last year. Ignacio and Eliza were among the first families founding St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Santa Fe, where he was a charter member of the Holy Name Society. He was a leader in the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over 40 years, and involved with the Union Protectiva and the American Legion. In 1995 Ignacio was awarded the Jefferson Award for excellence in community service. In 2002, Eliza and Ignacio were honored with the Archbishop's first St. Francis of Assisi Award; later, by St. John's, for fifty years of volunteer work. Many knew Ignacio as "I.J." the barber, a profession he practiced for over 40 years. He was most recognized for his work in the community, helping people individually or through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In many ways he was a humble man's philanthropist, never turning down a request for help. Ignacio is survived by his only brother, Jose Luis Romero (Rosemary); his children: Tomas Romero (Luba), Patricia Lopez (Antonio), Roberta Miller (Floyd), Wilfred Romero, and Richard Romero; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and innumerable relatives and friends. A viewing will be held Sunday, February 10, 3-6 p.m., at McGee Memorial Chapel. A Visitation will be held Monday, February 11, 6 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m. at St. John's. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 12, 10 a.m., at St. John's, followed by interment service at National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Santa Fe, in Ignacio's memory. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service 1399 Luisa Street Santa Fe, NM 87505 (505) 984-8600
