Obituary for HULICK

Ray L. Hulick, Postal Service Executive (Retired), age 86, formerly the Head of Sales and Retail for the United States Postal Service died of pneumonia on January 5, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital in Virginia. He lived in Stafford, VA at Marian Manor where he has resided for the last 2 years. Born in Iowa, but at age 2 his family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he grew up. At age 19, he began work as a clerk in the local Post Office there and was quickly assigned to a rural mail route. As part of his duties during WWII, he was responsible for delivering the telegrams informing families in rural areas of their soldiers killed in the line of duty. He later spent a year traveling around the country enrolling other rural mail carriers into the National Rural Letter Carriers Association because of a significant drop in membership occurring after the war. He was elected President in 1956 of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. In 1958, Mr. Hulick received a Presidential Appointment to Postal Service Headquarters in Washington, DC. He retired from Headquarters in 1977 after a distinguished Postal career of 35 years. He was predeceased by his wife Yolba Lou Howery of 12 years. His marriage to Veronica Mackey Hulick of Ft. Pierce, FL ended in divorce, his first wife M. Eileen Madsen also predeceased him after 20 years of marriage. Mr. Hulick is survived by Scott L. Hulick of Fredericksburg, VA and Jerry L. Hulick of Fairfax, VA, two children from his first marriage; Margaret Eileen Croghan (Maggie) of Burke, VA, daughter from his second marriage; Michael McKillips of Great Falls, VA, and Anne Crumbo of Ft. Pierce, FL, stepchildren from his second marriage; his sister Marta Lauser of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on January 19, 2008 at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 5725 Castlewellen Drive, Kingstown, VA 22315. Mr. Hulick will be laid to rest at Sunrise Memorial Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico after services take place there. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be given to the American Diabetes Association or the National Audubon Society in his name.
