Obituary for STRAWN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday December 17, 2007

Dorothy Pauline Bates Strawn died at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice one year ago following a brief illness. She was born in Davenport, NE, the oldest of the 14 children of Edgar D. and Erma Ringer Bates. Most of her childhood was spent in the Los Angeles, CA area where she completed her education, and in 1936 married her lifelong love, Enos James Strawn, Jr. They were the parents of two daughters. In 1944, the family moved to New Mexico, living in Farmington until 1948 when they moved to Albuquerque. In 1959, they returned to Farmington and later lived in Denver, CO before retiring to San Diego, CA where Dorothy and Enos lived for 30 years. Dorothy was employed in retail sales while living in New Mexico, and in real estate and property management in California. She and her husband were passionate golfers, playing golf almost daily during their latter years in San Diego. Dorothy returned to Albuquerque to live near her family in 2000 following Enos' death. There she enjoyed the social life and good friends she made at The Montebello on Academy where she served as Queen of the Red Hat Society until her death. She was known for being always impeccably coiffed and attired in her signature "Santa Fe" style, her ready laugh and enjoyment of life. She is survived by three sisters and two brothers; daughters, Janice del Castillo (David) of Albuquerque, and Kay Lewis (Willard) of Santa Fe; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her ashes were buried next to those of her husband in Fairview Cemetery in Santa Fe following a private family service. Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Cemetery Preservation Association, P.O. Box 5958, Santa Fe, NM 87502, or Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice, P.O. Box 26666, Albuquerque, NM 87125-6666. The family wishes to thank those friends and family members who have already made contributions in her name.
