Elvira Heuer Potter, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Born February 14, 1918 in Enderlin, ND. She grew up on a farm near Sheldon, ND and attended elementary through high school at Sheldon, ND. Upon graduation she stayed home a year to help her mother who had back problems. From 1937-1941 she attended North Dakota State University as a home economics major. In Biochemistry class her future husband, Loren Potter, asked her to be his dancing partner, which led to a lifetime partnership. During her senior year, he was a graduate student at Iowa State University and hitch-hiked and bused to Fargo to maintain the romance and the day after her graduation, June 10, 1941 they were married. "Vi" was employed by the Farm-Home Administration in Langdon, ND and Loren worked for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. In 1942 they lived in Oberlin, OH, 1942-1945 in Uniontown, OH employed in Wartime Research for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and oldest daughter, Claudia was born. In 1945-1946 they returned to Oberlin College to finish a master's degree and then to Minneapolis from 1946-1948 to complete a PhD at the University of Minnesota. From 1948-1958 the family lived in Fargo, ND while Loren was Professor of Plant Ecology at N.D.S.U. Daughters, Nancy and Audrey were born there and Janet while in Albuquerque while father was on sabbatical leave. Vi devoted herself to providing a good Christian home and raising four lovely daughters. In 1949, Loren and Vi built their cottage on Cotton Lake, MN. Loren and Vi enjoyed summer traditions there for 57 years. In 1958 the family moved back to Albuquerque, Loren accepting the position of Chairman of Biology Dept. at UNM, and retired in 1985. Vi used to prepare desserts for faculty and staff Christmas parties. She was involved in faculty dance club, dance activities of the Elks Club, Home Extension Club, active Alumnus of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, and in the First Methodist and then as a Deacon in First Presbyterian Church. In 2002 Loren and Vi moved to LaVida Llena Retirement Home, where they have made many new friends. Elvira is survived by her husband, Dr. Loren Potter; four daughters, Claudia Sego and husband, Peter, Nancy Cooper, and husband, Curtis Porter, Audrey Potter and partner, Santa Consiglio, and Janet Bridgers and husband, Donald; six grandchildren, Allison Sego-Isle and husband, Tim, Daren Cooper and wife, Catherine, Erica Cooper Weiss and husband, Rob, Daniel and Aaron Bridgers, and Leslie Porter; and great-grandchildren, Justin Cooper, Rebecca Weiss and Cameron Weiss; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Pauline Heuer; brother, Leon Heuer; sister, Bernice Carey; and son-in-law, Richard Cooper. Her loving heart and life of giving of herself during 66 years of marriage, shall long be remember by her friends and family. Services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St NE.
