William Sidney Hayman, 67, died October 29, 2007. Bill was born January 24, 1940 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At four years old, he moved to Albuquerque when Highland Pharmacy was purchased by his father S.J. "Red" Hayman. Bill attended Bandelier Elementary, Wilson Junior High, and was a graduate from Highland High School Class of 1958. He attended New Mexico Military Institute Junior College along with Roger Staubach, a football star. After graduation from NMMI, he received a Bachelors of Business Administration from the University of Albuquerque. Bill joined the Army National Guard, and trained at Ft. Lee, Virginia, Cooks and Bakers School. Bill served with the 150th Squadron in Korea as a cook soon after the U.S.S. Pueblo incident. After returning from the service Bill started Highland Medical Supply, which had its beginning in the basement of Highland Pharmacy. His business grew rapidly and eventually took up the entire block of 300-320 Central Ave. SE. It was the largest Medical Supply in New Mexico when it was sold to American Home Patient in 1995. Bill hired many physically and mentally handicapped people who also became his friends. At its peak, Highland Medical Supply employed 77 people, many for 20 years or more. Janice Wright, his accounting manager, is still employed with Highland Pharmacy after 35 years. Bill's passion was to help disabled people. He became an expert in the fitting of special wheelchairs and other equipment needed by the disabled, especially children. He led in obtaining equipment for handicapped drivers. He was also the first in New Mexico to offer the newest technology in oxygen delivery systems He was a licensed massage therapist and trained as an ostomy technician. Bill formed the Association of Medical Supply Dealers and belonged to Rotary International, Highland Baptist Church, Albuquerque Country Club, The Albuquerque Press Club and the UNM Lobo Club. He was a 32 Degree Mason and was a member of the Shrine. In 1995, Bill retired from his business to enjoy his many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, mountain biking and canoeing, both at his mountain cabin near Chama and on international trips. He also was actively involved in investing. As a property owner in the Huning Highland area, he was instrumental in forming the Huning Highland Merchants Association and the East Downtown (EDO) development group. Bill was hands-on in the redevelopment and remodeling of the Highland Medical Supply property into rental spaces. He and his wife, Becky Krebs Hayman, attracted new services into the project including Academy Reprographics, Route 66 Dry Cleaners and the Standard Diner. Bill is survived by his wife, Becky Krebs Hayman; his mother, Dorothy Hayman; his sister, Sarah Hayman Stevenson; and brother-in-law, Dr. Jim Stevenson; his brother, Arthur Hayman and wife, Tammy; nieces, Jill Stevenson, Tiffany Wheeler, Virginia Hayman-Barber and husband, Geoff Barber, Elizabeth Hayman; nephews, Brad Stevenson and wife, Sarah, Trevor Stevenson; and many close friends. Bill was a modest, kind and wonderful man who was an inspiration to many and will be missed by all. A private Memorial Service for Bill's family members will be held this week. A celebration of Bill's life will be held Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at Albuquerque County Club, 601 Laguna Boulevard, SW.
