Bessie Lee Jacobs, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1971, died peacefully on Sunday, September 2, 2007. She is survived by her three children, Darrell Jacobs, Richard Jacobs and wife, Janice and Debbie Baca and husband, Louis; six grandchildren, Wendi, Jennifer, David, Luke and wife, Amy, Michael, and Miranda and husband, George; three great-grandchildren, Marcus, Mariah, and Holly; and other relatives and friends. Lee was preceded in death by her husband, James Jacobs; her grandson, Gregory Jacobs; and one brother, Dick Shumate. She was born on November 2, 1921 in Belen, NM to K.D. and Winnie Waits Shumate. Throughout the years, Mom shared many childhood memories of her adventures living on a ranch in Yeso, NM with her mother, Winnie and step-father, Bill and attending a one-room school house. Her passion in life was her family and art. She produced many award winning paintings. With her husband, Jimmie, they opened the first art supply store in Belen, NM and offered classes to the public. Well known local artists including cowboy artist, Gordon Snidow, were guest instructors for the art classes. In 1969, they moved to Albuquerque and opened one of the first custom frame shops and a gallery in Old Town. Bessie Lee was well known in the art community, was instrumental in starting the New Mexico Art League, and a member of the National League of American Pen Women and the Yucca Art Gallery. Bessie Lee and Jimmie were married for 50 years before he succumbed to Alzheimer's disease in 1992. Her family will miss her dearly. We treasure and are thankful for the many good memories. "What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us". Memorial service will be held at Manzano del Sol Good Samaritan Village. Interment of cremated remains will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Manzano del Sol Good Samaritan Village, 5201 Roma Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 262-2311, ext 162.
