Obituary for GREER

William H. (Harry) Greer, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the Hospice of the Sandias in Albuquerque. He was born June 26, 1910 in Newbern, TN, the son of Walker and Jessie Caroline Greer. He grew up in Staunton, VA, graduated from Staunton Military Academy and attended the University of Maryland. Harry was a career United States Army officer, rising to the rank of Lt. Col. In addition to numerous duty assignments in the US, he served in Africa, Europe and in Korea. He spent three years in Roswell, as instructor for the US Army Organized Reserves. He served with distinction in the European theatre of WWII with the 2nd Armored Division and the US Air Force, Europe. Harry was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a second oak leaf cluster along with numerous other citations and awards. Subsequent to WWII he served as an advisor with the Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) in Seoul, South Korea. Col. Greer retired from active duty in October, 1960 and relocated to Albuquerque where he and his beloved wife Marion were involved in many various social and civic organizations. Harry married his wife, Marion F. Stinemeyer (Stiney), in Hilton Village, VA, on November 28, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter born in Germany, and by his only brother, James C. (Jay) Greer, formerly of Albuquerque and Murfreesboro, TN. Among the many organizations Harry was involved with were the Camp Knox Masonic Lodge #919 in Radcliff, KY, Zia Daylight Lodge, Albuquerque, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple of Albuquerque, the Shrine Pipe Band, Scottish Rite of Santa Fe, a life member of the York Rite, Scotland, Red Cross of Constantine and he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was past president and a life member of American Legion Post 99, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #401and past Commander of VFW Chapter 33, and member of the Military Order of World Wars. He was a loyal, dedicated and long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Albuquerque. Harry was also a former member of the Bernalillo County Citizens Unit, the New Mexico Rangers and the Sojourners. Harry especially loved New Mexico, and was an avid outdoorsman, camper and hunter. In addition to visiting many countries around the world, he and Marion had visited all 50 of the United States which had been a goal of his, made possible by many years of travel in a number of campers and motor homes. Harry is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marion, and by his nephew, William H. (Bill) Greer of Murfreesboro, TN. Friends may visit French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Monday, August 27, 2007, 11:30 a.m., with Funeral Services following at 12:30 p.m., with Rev. David Madara officiating. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
