Obituary for CULLER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday August 22, 2007

Mabel June Culler Porter passed away peacefully on August 15, 2007 after going through her normal morning routine of making a pot of coffee about 4:00 a.m. and lying back down for a while before waking her beloved grandkids Danny and Shawna for school. She was loved and admired by everyone she met for being a devoted mother, grandmother, friend, co-worker and more than anything, a generous and caring human being. She will be missed very much. June was born in Albuquerque, NM on June 15, 1931 to Yourie H. Porter and Leta B. Sutton. She graduated from AHS in 1948 and had a wonderful adolescence with her mother; step-father, Earl; sisters, Myrline and Myrtle; brother, RL; and friends, Mary and Katy. Much of her childhood and early adult years were spent with family and friends in and around Corona, NM. She had many great memories and stories about everything from rattlesnake hunting, to chasing boys and family time with husband Earl and successive kids Debbie, Bill, Stefanie, David and finally the unexpected one, little Tommy. Her loving niece, Bertha, was never left behind in the early years. A tireless worker, she started at Albuquerque Stationery downtown, went on to work close to 30 years at the horse races during the State Fair, at The Downs, and in Santa Fe, and finally settled in at the Bridge St. Family Dollar store where she was their best worker for 8 years, going well into her seventies. Some of her favorite years were spent with daughter Stefanie who she worked with, was her best friend and loved to shop and talk. She was a lifelong resident of 911 Gatewood in the South Valley where she had countless friends, neighbors and acquaintances. June is survived by her two sons, Bill (wife, Terry) and David (wife, Sonia); her grandkids, Amanda and Jennifer, Danny and Shawna, Megan and Song Song; her ex-husband, Earl; and her son-in-law Art Hennigas. June has another son that shared coffee with her every morning and whose commitment and understanding meant the world to her, Gary Cortez. A Celebration of her life will be held at the family home, 911 Gatewood SW, Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. (242-3087). Cremation by Direct Services
