Obituary for HAWK

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 20, 2007

Dorothy Jean Houston Hawk passed away May 17, 2007. She was born October 8, 1923 in Sepulpa, OK to Forest and Mattielea Miller Houston. Her family moved often in the West Texas and New Mexico oil fields during the 1920s and early 1930s until her father was killed in an oil well explosion. High School was spent in White Oak, TX and upon graduation she attended college one year and then moved to Washington, D.C. December 1941 to work as a secretary in the war effort. It was there that she met John Milton Hawk, her husband of 64 years. They married January 1943 in Sacramento, CA just before he joined the Merchant Marines after leaving the FBI in San Diego. After the war they settled in Burlington, IA where their only child, John D. Hawk, DDS was born. In 1954 they moved to Las Cruces, in 1966 to Long Island, NY, and then in 1971 to Clear Lake City, TX, as she followed her husband's work with NASA and devoted herself to her family and church. 1979 brought retirement for John and Jean and many years of happiness with time split yearly between their homes in Albuquerque and Pagosa Springs. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, playing the piano, and teaching Sunday School until she suffered a stroke 2 years ago. Jean valiantly struggled to overcome the stroke disabilities until last Tuesday night when she had a second one. She lived a joyous and happy life and was ready to meet her Lord. Surviving her are her husband, son, and her dear friend, Joy Mitchell.
