Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 13, 2007

Georgia Morine Meeks (Vaughn, NM) Georgia Morine Meeks Archibeque passed away on May 10, 2007, at the Betty Dare Good Samaritan Center, Alamogordo, NM. Maurine was born January 13, 1921 in Vaughn, NM to the union of George M Lewis and Margaret McNeill. She attended Vaughn High School and was valedictorian of the Class of 1937. She was married to Clayton T. Meeks and they lived in Vaughn for the majority of the time, interrupted by short period of living in Clovis, NM, and Grants Pass, OR. Four sons were born to Maurine and Clayton, George Clayton, William Patrick (Pat), James Michael (Mike), and Clayton Taylor (Taylor). Maurine was a loving and caring Mother who could have written the book on "1001 ways to cook ground beef" ... she was a wonderful cook. This was evident when she and the band parents club took over the lunchroom and provided meals for the school system. She became the 'head cook' and began a program of preparing fresh hot rolls with the meals.... remembered by many. She worked for many years at the Vaughn Mercantile and eventually opened a small store with a fresh meat market. Maurine also served as a member of the emergency responder team with the Town of Vaughn, riding with the ambulance whenever necessary; taking blood pressures at the Senior Citizens Center.... her thrill at assisting in the delivery of a baby was a highlight of this 'job'. Maurine is survived by her husband, Louis Archibeque of Vaughn; three sons, Pat (Carol) Meeks of Artesia, Mike Meeks of Las Cruces and Taylor Meeks of Deming. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Keith Meeks of Memphis, Tennessee, Merien "Bit" Alexander of Deming, Kipp (Kim) Meeks of Denver, Colorado, Martha Morine "Sam" (Scott) Watson of Dora, and Margaret Michele "Shelly" Meeks of Burleson, Texas. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Tanner Clayton Meeks, Tucker Cole Meeks, Terner Carlos Meeks, Tyler Chance Watson, Terral Lee Watson, Tanessa Len Watson, Trinity Gene Watson and Cassandra Lynn Hooten. She is predeceased by her parents, Clayton T Meeks, George Clayton Meeks, siblings Leo Brancfield, Marguerite Knight, Hope Smith, Ruby Lawrence and Frank Brancfield. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 14, 2007, at the First Baptist Church, Vaughn, NM, with Rev. Norman Riggin officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn. Refreshments for family and friends will follow at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 804 N. Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, NM.
