Obituary for LIESNER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday April 29, 2007

Loma M. Liesner, age 83, born in El Centro, CA, January 15, 1924, peacefully passed from this life on April 19, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec, NM. Loma, a resident of Aztec since 1993, previously lived in Albuquerque since 1930. Loma was preceded in death by her daughter, Nelda Jo Galloway; parents, C.C. and Alie Haralson; and brother, Ernest Haralson. She is survived by a daughter, Judith K. and son-in-law, Ronald S. Mapstone, Aztec; and granddaughters, Shelley J. Mapstone, Albuquerque, NM, Tracy L. Pinto (Neil Pinto), Castro Valley, CA, Kristin Mapstone Smith (Glen Smith), Plano, TX, and honorary granddaughter, Darla Dodd. Great-grandchildren are Zachary and Samantha Pinto, and Max and Jake Smith. Loma is also survived by brother, CC Haralson Jr.; sister, Ora Slusser; and sister-in-law, Ella Haralson; many nieces and nephews and good friends. Loma was a savvy, independent woman ahead of her time. A retired bookkeeper/accountant of 35 years, she was employed by Singer Sewing Machine Co., Deane Tire Co., Albuquerque Production Credit Association, and Seven Bar Flying Service. She later became quite entrepreneurial as a self-employed, free-lance and contract bookkeeper, gift shop owner, and even dabbled in real estate and politics. Loma adored her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Always living nearby, she had a wonderful presence in her granddaughters' lives. Frequent surprises, like a furnished playhouse, frilly beds and ducklings, made Grandma's home a little girl's paradise. As the girls matured, they loved her youthful perspective and open-mindedness. "Gigi's" great-grandchildren have been the highlight of her last years. Loma's creative flair marked all of her favorite hobbies. She was passionate about oil painting, gardening, baking, sewing, and crafts. She was especially proud of her paintings and was an "on-call" seamstress, designing fiesta and formal dresses, wedding gowns and other apparel. Friends and relatives are proud to own the results of her many artistic endeavors. All who knew her will remember her ingenuity, generosity, style and moxie. Her quick wit and terrific sense of humor brought life to any gathering. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the National MS Society and/or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Cremation has been arranged by Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 405 S. Main Ave., (505) 334-9332. A memorial service is pending in Albuquerque in early August. An announcement will be published prior to the event. Sincere thanks to the staff at Good Samaritan Nursing Home and Basin Home Health & Hospice for your role in caring for Loma. Your kindness is greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.
