Obituary for SPAMPINATO-HASEY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday April 19, 2007

Dorothy Joan Spampinato-Hasey went home to God after being diagnosed with Meyodysplasia that transformed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia. My Mom was born April 20, 1930 in Bayside, NY. "Dot", as she was referred to by her immediate family and close friends was preceded into Heaven by her mother, "Elsie"; father, "Dominic"; niece, Gail; brother, "Donald"; nephew, "Donald Jr."; brother, "Bobby"; brother, "Jimmy"; and sister-in-law, "Gloria". Mom was a "depression era child" she knew where to spend her money and was thrilled to get the best "deal" possible. I am so proud to say that she worked for Woman's Day Magazine in New York City, Bloomingdales in Flushing, NY and the Rio Rancho INTEL for 16 years. Mom retired from INTEL in 2001, and I believe at the time, she was the "most mature" person on staff. Mom had a wonderful sense of humor and really liked to have a good time. When she was younger, she loved dancing, meeting with friends at the Crest Haven Country Club. Mom played a great game of tennis and enjoyed a beer or 2 (maybe 3) while playing against the guys and gals (she often won). She was a true animal lover and treated all of her dogs like additional kids. She was funny, very sarcastic, and she was my true friend, but most of all the best Mother I could have ever asked for. Due to circumstances not in her control, she basically raised me by herself, walked me down the isle at my wedding, was at the hospital all night for the birth of our son, loved my wonderful husband like a son she never had. She and Paul were with me the night I was diagnosed with cancer, and she was the BEST Nana to our only son, "her only grandchild" Matthew. Mom, there is such a hole in my heart that will could only be filled when we meet again. You meant the world to me, and I will think of you every day until the day I pass on and see you waiting for me. Probably asking, "Where were you" and "why are you wearing that"? Dorothy is survived by her only daughter, Jan, husband, Paul and their son, Matthew Phillip Fensterer. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Spampinato; sister-in-law, Helen Spampinato; her nieces, Barbara, Joni, Debbie, Linda and their spouses; her nephews, Paul, Bobby, Michael, Jimmy and their spouses. Mom is also survived by her very best friend from kindergarten, Sophia Sabatini of Bayside, NY, and her beloved dogs, Mia, Sophie, and Izzy. A very special Thank-you to Dr. Rob Hromas of the UNM Cancer Center for his knowledge, expertise in Mom's illness, as well as the patience in dealing with Jan, all of the nurses at New Mexico Oncology, Dr. Douglas Clark and the entire staff of the Presbyterian Infusion Center. A very special thank-you to Dr. Tina Welker, Dr. Richard Sauerman and Sharon from the Presbyterian Physicians Group for many years of care and concern that made all 3 of you in some way a part of our Family. All of these people are living proof of "Angles on Earth". A viewing will be at French's Mortuary on Golf Course held on Thursday, April 19, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Rosary will follow from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 20, 2007 (Mom's Birthday) at St. Thomas Aquinas in Rio Rancho at 10:30 a.m. There will be a procession to the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Leukemia Foundation, or Lapdog Rescue.org. Please don't feel the need to wear black, we will try to celebrate Mom's birthday and the start of her new life seated with God and her family.
