Obituary for STUMP

Howard Tompkins Stump Jr., 92, died March 22, 2007. Mr. Stump was born in Virginia September 29, 1914 and had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1952. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Cropper Stump; his parents of Bel Air, MD; and two sisters, Mrs. Russel T. Kearney and Mrs. Donald Johnson of Maryland. He is survived by nieces and nephews in Maryland, Pennsylvania, England, and Switzerland. Howard was reared in Harford County, MD. He attended Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore; the University of Hawaii; Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. In academic year 1968-69 he was a faculty Research Associate at Columbia University, School of International Affairs. He was an employee of Sandia National Laboratories from 1952 to 1979. Upon retirement, he established a consulting business, Arundel Research Corporation, which he operated for over a decade. He served in the Navy during WWII and was later retired as a Lieutenant, USNR. He was a cryptanalyst in the navy and employed in that capacity by the National Security Agency, prior to coming to New Mexico. He was a Board member of the Albuquerque Special Education Center; a Board member, Treasurer, and President of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra (Albuquerque Civic Symphony); and incorporator, Board member and President of the Friends of Art of the UNM Art Museum; a Trustee of the Albuquerque Academy; and a member of the Albuquerque Committee on Foreign Relations. He was a member of The Army and Navy Club of Washington, D.C., the Marine Memorial Club of San Francisco and the Victory Service Club of London, England. Memorial Services will be held on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano Rd. NW. Following the memorial, a reception will be held at 8409 Guadalupe Trail NW.
