Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday April 10, 2007

Frederick Fornoff, 95, of Albuquerque died Thursday, April 5, 2007 after a long illness. He was born in Santa Fe, NM on October 14, 1911, before New Mexico became a State. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Fornoff; mother, Lullie; brother, Howell; sister, Dorothy and granddaughter, Melissa Ruth. He is survived by wife Lois; sons, Dr. Frederick Fornoff/Sara of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Richard Fornoff/Julie of Prairie Grove, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Brandon, Karen, Jeremy, Dylan, Catherine and John; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Tressie Glaze; cousin, James Borland of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. As a boy, Frederick was a marble champion of Albuquerque. His school mates called him "Iron Muscles" and he was always there to protect his little brother, Howell, from bullies. He was also the best billiard player in Albuquerque, whenever Jimmy Moore was out of town. Frederick was a highly decorated veteran of WWII. The men in his unit called him "The Old Man" because he was 10 years older than the rest of them. Before the war he had been through boot camp with the 120th Infantry Division. After the entrance of the U. S. into the war, Frederick was recalled for training in the Mojave Desert and in Louisiana. His company was part of the 357th Regiment of the 90th Infantry Division that landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day in June 1944. From June until the surrender of the German High Command on May 7, 1945, his regiment fought in battles in Belgium, France and Germany (the Maginot Line, the Siegfried Line), and many others. Frederic was decorated by Generals Eisenhower and Patton, receiving three Bronze Stars for Heroic action. As one of the most decorated soldiers in his company, he received early discharge on March 28, 1945 and returned to Albuquerque, where he was employed by and retired from Sears Roebuck in 1968. After retirement, he and Lois made the most of their free time exploring the beauties of the U.S. and Canada in their motor home. Frederick had a wonderful sense of humor; he was loved by all and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church where a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place with private family services at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, not far from the grave of his father, Fred Fornoff (1859 - 1935), who was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, City Marshal of Albuquerque in 1898 and later, Captain of the New Mexico Mounted Police. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM or your favorite charity.
