Obituary for MAAS

Eugenia Maria Maas passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2007, after a brief illness. She was born in Las Vegas, NM, 90 years ago on October 7, 1916, to the late Judge Luis E. Armijo and Eugenia Delgado de Armijo. She is survived by her daughter, Carla Bashore; son-in-law, Frank Bashore; granddaughter, Amy Bashore; sister, Carmen Blattman of Las Vegas; and nieces and nephews, Anita, Roberto, Christina, Adea, Francisca, Jeannie, Patricia, Thomas, Luis, John, Steve, Paul, and Linda and their families; as well as many cousins. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carlos, Luis and Roberto; and husband, Tjebbe Wilem Maas. Eugenia began her career with the United States Government, working for the Library of Congress when she was posted by the Department of State to the American Embassy in Mexico City in the early 1940s. She then moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she resided for twenty years. There, she worked with the Food for Peace program in the American Embassy. Upon leaving Brazil, she moved to Paris, France, where she again worked with programs sponsored by the American Embassy, SHAPE and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Upon her return to the States, she resided in Virginia, and continued her government service with the International Police Academy in Washington, D.C. She retired to Albuquerque in 1986. To her nieces and nephews, "Aunt Jean" was an inspiration and a joy. With her great charm, she captured their attention and imagination with spellbinding and enchanting stories of adventure and intrigue during her life abroad. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family who survive her. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2007, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel.
